Vol. 411 No. 7

Written Answers. - Cork Regional Hospital Appointments.

Bernard Allen

Question:

172 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will outline the circumstances under which he sanctioned the creation of four positions as assistant managers in Cork Regional Hospital at a time when there were serious job losses in front line staff.

Early last year I outlined in this House an action programme for 1990 and beyond for the health services. A key element of this programme was the development of a high quality management as a tool for the achievement of a better service. This action was considered necessary in response to the growing need to address deficiencies in this area.

Since then I have approved an initiative to strengthen the management of key hospitals. In this regard I have approved the creation of a management structure for Cork Regional Hospital which provides for a general manager, a deputy general manager and four functional managers.
These new management structures are being put in place on a pilot basis in key hospitals and in time will be evaluated to determine their success.
