Written Answers. - Regional Sports Centres.

Question:

227 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education if she will outline the progress on the provision of regional sports centres at (a) Sligo, (b) Cork, (c) Athlone, (d) Galway and (e) the National Basketball Centre, Tallaght, Dublin 24; and the total expenditure on each project to date.

The current position in relation to the projects referred to is as follows: Sligo: Allocation £1 million. The project comprises the provision of a 25 metre swimming pool adjoining the existing indoor sports centre. Sligo Corporation have appointed consultants and the planning work is in progress in consultation with my Department.

Cork: Allocation £1.7 million. Athlone: Allocation £1.5 million. These projects comprise a 25 metre swimming pool at Cork and a multi-purpose indoor sports hall in Athlone. Proposals received from private consortia for the design, construction, part-finance and operation of these centres are being examined in consultation with the two local authorities concerned.
Galway: Allocation £1.5 million. An allocation of £0.5 million has been made for a 400 metre synthetic running track on a site at University College, Galway. Tenders for this project are presently being sought.
My Department are in consultation with Galway Corporation in relation to the range and location of the other sports facilities to be provided on which the balance of £1 million will be expended.
National Basketball Arena, Tallaght allocation £800,000. A tender submission received from the Irish Basketball Association is under consideration in my Department.
