Vol. 411 No. 7

Written Answers. - Army Support Services.

Patrick McCartan

Question:

237 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Defence if he can confirm that the Army authorities have sought a report from a distinguished psychologist on the sexual difficulties experienced by soldiers returned from extended and stressful periods of overseas service with the UN; and if he has satisfied himself that the Army has adequate resources both financial and medical to deal with such problems as arise from time to time.

As regards the first part of the question, I have been informed by the military authorities that no such report has been sought. In relation to the second part of the question the position is that the welfare and family support arrangements for Defence Forces personnel have been under review for some time in that regard I expect to appoint a senior social worker at an early date. This person will have the task of assisting in and advising on the planning, establishment and subsequent provisions of a revised welfare service for the Defence Forces.
