Vol. 411 No. 7

Written Answers. - Monaghan Schools.

William Cotter

Question:

81 Mr. Cotter asked the Minister for Education if she has decided to sanction expenditure on repairs to the national schools in Ballybay, County Monaghan; if she has satisfied herself that this is the correct course of action; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Major remedial works are necessary to correct structural faults in the national school, Ballybay, County Monaghan. As the Deputy is aware, the school's authority engaged a private architect to design, supervise and build the school. However, my Department's architect has now drawn up a schedule of remedial works following detailed investigations to alleviate the poor conditions now obtaining at the school.

My Department have had discussions with the school authorities to chart the best way forward in this unfortunate case. However, because of the scale of the problems now evident in this school and the extent of remedial works required to rectify the construction problems my Department's architect has recommended a phased programme of works. When tender documents, invitation of tenders, etc. are prepared the question of grant aid will be then addressed.

Tender documents have been received and examined for the erection of new national schools at Annyalla and for Doohamlet, County Monaghan. The approval of tenders and the placing of the contract will be considered in the context of the availability of capital and the financial situation obtaining for 1992.

The Department's architect has been asked to prepare a sketch scheme for a new school at Killany national school, County Monaghan. When the sketch scheme has been received it will be forwarded to the chairman of the board of management to enable them to apply for planning permission.
