Vol. 411 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Number of Inhabited Islands.

Austin Deasy

Question:

8 Mr. Deasy asked the Taoiseach the number of inhabited islands around the Irish coast; and the number of islanders in each individual case.

There were 75 islands off the coast of Ireland returned as inhabited during the 1986 census of population. The relevant population of each of these islands is set out in a table which I propose to circulate in the Official Report. Comparable details are not yet available from the most recent census held on 21 April 1991.

Following is the statement:

Population of inhabited islands off the coast, 1986 Census.

*In some cases the areas of land concerned may not, strictly speaking, be considered as islands since they are connected to the mainland by a causeway or bridge, or may be reached by land at low tide.

We are now about to embark on priority questions for which 15 minutes only are provided under the Standing Orders of the House.
