Vol. 412 No. 1

Written Answers. - Free Travel Scheme.

Ivor Callely

Question:

88 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will consider extending the free travel scheme to people who should qualify for disabled person's maintenance allowance but are not in receipt of disabled person's maintenance allowance as they are in continual residential care; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Persons in receipt of disabled person's maintenance allowance from the health board are entitled to a free travel pass under my Department's scheme.

One of the improvements I introduced last year was to allow recipients of the disabled person's maintenance allowance who enter health board residential care and, consequently, lose their allowance to nevertheless retain their free travel passes.

The question of extending the free travel scheme to cover those already in residential care who would otherwise be entitled to a disabled person's maintenance allowance would be a matter for consideration in a budgetary context.
