Vol. 412 No. 5

Written Answers. - Irish Sugar Company.

John Bruton

Question:

24 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance if he is satisfied with the supervision of the activities of the Irish Sugar Company from 1988 to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In 1980 primary responsibility for Siuicre Éireann cpt. transferred from the Minister for Finance to the Minister for Agriculture and Food. The Minister for Finance did of course continue to have a number of functions in relation to the company. In this regard I am fully satisfied that all statutory obligations relating to supervision by the Minister for Finance of the activities of the company have been complied with.

Notwithstanding this the recent revelations about aspects of the Sugar Distributors (Holdings) Ltd. transactions are disturbing to say the least and I have clearly expressed my views on this and other matters in the context of the recent EGM of the company.
