Vol. 413 No. 2

Written Answers. - Energy Conservation Policy.

Mary Flaherty

Question:

8 Miss Flaherty asked the Minister for Energy when he will be in a position to publish a comprehensive energy conservation policy as recommended by the International Energy Agency.

My Department's ongoing energy conservation policy is to encourage the efficient use of energy in all sectors of the economy, in order to conserve scarce resources, to achieve financial savings, and to protect the environment.

This policy is implemented by (a) direct action by my Department, particularly in the area of energy saving in public buildings; (b) a programme operated by Eolas on my behalf in the industrial and services sectors; (c) support for the ESB's programme in efficient electricity utilisation, and (d) encouragement to enterprises to avail fully of EC incentives for energy saving.

The International Energy Agency's recommendation was to continue work on developing policy in this area, which I intend doing.
