Vol. 413 No. 2

Written Answers. - Galway Geological Survey.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

38 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Energy if he will outline the progress which has been made on the geological survey of the south Galway area to ascertain the cause of severe flooding in locations in that area each year; if he will further outline the steps which can be taken to alleviate this problem for farmers in south Galway; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Earlier this year I requested the Geological Survey of Ireland to investigate the reason for the exceptional flooding in 1990 and 1991 in parts of south Galway. Since then relevant information on the geology, surface water, groundwater, flooded areas, wildlife aspects, forestry, drainage and so on has been compiled and examined.

The report will be completed and available to me shortly. I hope to be in a position then to make a statement on the causes of the flooding and to suggest some practical steps to help reduce the extent of flooding in the future.
