Vol. 413 No. 2

Written Answers. - Irish Soccer Fans in Turkey.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

71 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will immediately call in the Turkish Ambassador to protest at the outrageous treatment meted out to Irish soccer fans in Turkey on Wednesday, 13 November 1991.

I am very concerned at media reports which I have read regarding the treatment of a number of Irish citizens who travelled to Istanbul to attend last week's international football match.

When I saw these reports I instructed the Irish Embassy at Rome, which is also accredited to Turkey, to contact our honorary consulate at Istanbul to establish what had happened. My Department have also been in contact with the Football Association of Ireland in the matter.

When I receive a full report on foot of these contacts I will decide on what course of action would be appropriate. In the meantime, any Irish citizen who has a specific complaint about the situation may contact my Department directly in the matter.
