Vol. 413 No. 2

Written Answers. - Cambodian Peace Talks.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

72 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the fact that Pol Pot was present in the hotel in Pattaya in which the June peace talks on Cambodia took place; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

While there were press reports that Pol Pot was in Pattaya during the peace talks on Cambodia held there last June, these were not confirmed.

The June talks in Pattaya made significant progress. The Cambodian factions agreed to an unlimited ceasefire and undertook to stop receiving foreign military aid. Agreement was also reached on the question of the chairmanship of the Supreme National Council of Cambodia and that the SNC should represent Cambodia at the United Nations General Assembly. These positive developments were an indication of a growing spirit of compromise and flexibility by all concerned which led to the signature of the comprehensive political settlement of the conflict in Cambodia on 23 October in Paris.
