Question:

167 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Labour if he will outline (a) the amount of moneys from the EC Structural Funds which have been spent under the aegis of his Department in (1) 1988, (2) 1989 and (3) 1990 and (b) the amount of matching funds which were spent by his Department for each year; if he will list the projects which were funded by such funds; if he will further outline the amount of funds which have been committed for 1991; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The amount of Structural Fund moneys spent under the aegis of my Department in the years 1988, 1989 and 1990 are as follows:

The moneys were spent on a range of vocational training and job creation programmes including:
(1) For FÁS — specific skills training, apprenticeship, early school-leavers, long term unemployed, community youth training programme, teamwork, social employment scheme.
(2) For CERT — skills training for the hotel and catering industry and training for the long term unemployed.
(3) For IMI — training in management techniques for small and medium sized undertakings.
The final figures for 1991 are not yet available but preliminary estimates indicate that expenditure will be of the order of:

The above figures for Structural Funds relate mainly to the European Social Fund but European Regional Development Fund elements for FÁS and CERT are also included.
The CERT figures include expenditure on activities carried out in conjunction with the Department of Education on behalf of CERT.
