Vol. 414 No. 1

Written Answers. - Smithfield (Dublin) Horse Market.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

89 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Justice if he is satisfied with the enforcement of regulations at the Smithfield Horse Market; and if any prosecutions have taken place for the ill-treatment of the animals sold there.

The Garda authorities have informed me that they have met with representatives of Dublin Corporation and the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in relation to sales of horses at Smithfield and have taken a number of measures to ensure that horses are not ill-treated. Members of the Garda Síochána maintain a presence at such sales and take appropriate action if there is evidence that horses are being ill-treated. I am informed by the Garda authorities that there have been prosecutions in a number of cases.
