Vol. 414 No. 4

Written Answers. - Municipal Incinerators.

John Bruton

Question:

159 Mr. J. Bruton, Mr. J. Mitchell, Miss Flaherty, Mr. Connor and Mr. Carey asked the Minister for the Environment if EC directives on municipal incinerators are fully in force in this country.

EC Council Directives 89/369/EEC and 89/429/EEC provide for the control of air emissions from, respectively, new and existing municipal waste incineration plant.

As there were no existing municipal waste incinerators in this country, the application of Directive 89/429/EEC did not arise. As regards Directive 89/369/EEC, Ireland has affirmed that it will ensure that all the necessary legal provisions are brought into force before authorisation is granted for the construction and operation of any plant to which the directive might apply.
