Vol. 414 No. 5

Written Answers. - Women's Rights In Kuwait.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

30 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will outline the efforts which are being made through the United Nations or the EC to secure the right to vote and other democratic rights for women in the Emirate of Kuwait; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The United Nations Security Council took the decisions which resulted in the liberation of Kuwait from Iraqi occupation.

The latest reports from Kuwait indicate that the authorities there are committed to the return of parliamentary life in October 1992 and to guaranteeing the impartiality of elections there. The question of the participation of women in parliamentary elections and of the granting to them of other political rights is reported to be the subject of a study being carried out by the Kuwait National Council, the interim parliamentary assembly.
