Vol. 414 No. 5

Written Answers. - Western European Union.

Dick Spring

Question:

42 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will outline the Government's current policy towards the Western European Union; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ireland is not a member of the Western European Union which was established by the Brussels Treaty of 1948 and modified and completed by a Protocol in 1954. The question of the relationship between the European Union and the Western European Union was one of the matters under negotiation in the Intergovernmental Conference on political union leading to the European Council in Maastricht. The Taoiseach will report to the Dáil on the outcome of the European Council tomorrow.
