Vol. 414 No. 5

Written Answers. - Vehicle Marking Legislations.

Ivan Yates

Question:

89 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment if he has any proposals to update regulations in relation to side marking regulations for articulated vehicles which are currently not recognised in other EC member states and which may contravene EC directives on vehicle construction; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The existing Irish regulations require certain heavy goods vehicles to display both side and rear reflex reflective markings, designed to highlight the vehicle at night and thereby reduce the risk of accident. The EC Commission has not indicated that these regulations are in breach of EC law and I have no immediate plans to amend them. I will keep the position under review in the light of developments at EC level.
