Vol. 414 No. 6

Written Answers. - Civil Service Overtime.

Patrick D. Harte

Question:

17 Mr. Harte asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the grades of civil servants which are eligible for overtime; and if he has any plans to remunerate them for work carried out outside normal working hours.

In the Civil Service normal overtime arrangements are, as a general rule, applicable to officers who are conditioned to fixed weekly hours of work and whose salary maxima are equal to, or below, the salary maximum of the higher executive grade. As there are well over 1,000 different grades in the Civil Service, I do not propose to list all of the grades which do not come within the scope of these arrangements. I should however say that the fact that a grade does not qualify for normal overtime arrangements does not necessarily debar its members from any payment for extra attendance. When a member of such a grade gives substantial extra attendance and cannot take time off in lieu, an ex-gratia payment will usually be approved.

I have no plans to change the existing arrangements as outlined above.
