Question:

67 Mrs. Taylor-Quinn asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the categories in public service employment which have (1) increased in numbers since 1987 and (2) decreased; and, in the case of increases if he will outline the reason for each increase.

I propose to circulate in the Official Report a table giving the data on public service employment requested by the Deputy.

This table details employment levels across the public service at 1 January 1987 and 1 January 1991, with the exception of the Civil Service, in respect of which updated data is now available to 1 October 1991 and is included. This data shows that numbers employed in each category of the public service decreased, and in some sectors decreased very significantly, during the four year period in question.
