Vol. 414 No. 6

Written Answers. - PAYE Tax Relief.

Dick Spring

Question:

82 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Finance whether he will introduce tax relief for PAYE contributors in respect of fees paid to third level education institutions.

I have no plans to introduce such a relief. The Deputy will be aware that the recent review of the Programme for Government sets out the Government's firm intention to endeavour to achieve the objectives of a standard income tax rate of 25 per cent with a higher rate of 44 per cent. The Government will also begin working towards a considerable widening of the standard income tax band and increasing the personal allowances. This reform is to be funded by a systematic curtailment of exemptions, shelters, allowances and concessionary tax rates.

I would point out that students in third level education, including those not in receipt of a higher education grant, are already heavily subsidised through the high level of State expenditure on third level education.
