Vol. 414 No. 6

Written Answers. - Insurance Discs.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

129 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for the Environment if he has any plans to direct insurance companies to supply insurance discs, for display in car windows, which are printed in non-fade inks so as to ensure their legibility for at least 12 months; if not, the reason; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Insurance discs are computer printed for issue in conjunction with insurance certificates and this inhibits the use of non-fade inks. However, the motor standing committee of the Irish Insurance Federation have just recommended that all companies should take reasonable steps to guard against fading and to address any unusually high incidence of fading reported to them by policy holders or other parties. Under the Road Traffic (Insurance Disc) Regulations 1984, insurance are required to issue, free of charge, a replacement for a disc which has faded.
