Vol. 415 No. 7

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff Reductions.

Tony Gregory

Question:

1 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline the proposals he has, if any, for the reduction of staff in his Department; if so, if he will give details of (a) when and (b) where these reductions will take place; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Pursuant to the terms of my Department's administrative budget agreement with the Department of Finance there is a commitment to a reduction of 2 per cent in each of the years 1992 and 1993 in basic administrative costs, including staff costs.

Furthermore, as stated by my predecessors in reply to Dáil questions on 31 October 1991 and 4 December 1991, an examination of the organisation of the civil branches of my Department has been completed and an examination of administrative structures in the Defence Forces has been undertaken. It is envisaged that any changes decided upon as a result of these examinations will take some time to implement.
