Vol. 415 No. 7

Written Answers. - Road Warning Signs.

Michael Moynihan

Question:

123 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for the Environment whether local authorities have any responsibility for the provision of warning signs on county and national roads, advising motorists of areas where cattle may be crossing such roads.

The provision of warning signs is a matter for local authorities. Such signs are either prescribed in regulations made under section 95 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961, or authorised for use under the same section. A specific warning sign relating to cattle or other farm animals crossing a road has not been prescribed or authorised. However, Wexford County Council are at present conducting an experiment on behalf of my Department using a prototype sign warning motorists of cattle crossing at locations on national road N25 in the county.
