Vol. 415 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Galway Garda Stations.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

43 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the plans, if any, he has for (1) the repair or replacement of Garda stations at Gort, Loughrea, Salthill and Oranmore in County Galway; and (2) the refurbishment of Carraroe, Lettermore, Roundstone and Inverin Garda stations in County Galway; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There are no plans to replace the Garda stations at Gort, Loughrea and Salthill. During 1991, windows were replaced at Gort station, Loughrea station was painted internally and externally and Oranmore station was painted externally. It is intended to carry out major refurbishment works at Gort, incorporation of married quarters at Loughrea and major refurbishment and incorporation of married quarters at Salthill.

In the case of Oranmore, Lettermore, Roundstone and Inverin, it is intended to provide new stations in these centres in the future. However, it is not possible to say at this stage when work on these various projects might commence.

There are no plans for a new station at Carraroe or for repair or refurbishment works to the station. The married quarters attached to the station suffered internal damage by fire on 20 April 1989. However, as no member of the force wishes to occupy this accommodation at present and there are more pressing accommodation priorities, there are no proposals for further refurbishment works beyond replacing the ceiling, which has already been done.
