Vol. 415 No. 8

Written Answers. - Effluent Discharges.

Phil Hogan

Question:

343 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the agreement, if any, which has been made by the EC Council of Ministers adopting common discharge limits on dangerous chemicals; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The following directives setting limit values for effluent discharges containing the substances indicated have been adopted by the Council of the European Communities. Some directives relate to industries and uses of substances which are not currently carried on in Ireland. Where appropriate, local authorities may attach conditions to effluent discharge licences issued under the Local Government (Water Pollution) Acts, 1977 and 1990, for the purpose of securing compliance with limit values.
