Vol. 415 No. 8

Written Answers. - Elimination of PCBs/PCTs.

Phil Hogan

Question:

345 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for the Environment if there are any proposals to accentuate research and development efforts with a view to improving the technologies for the elimination of PCB/PCTs; and if he will outline the progress, if any, which has been made in this regard.

There is a concerted effort at EC and other international level to phase out the use of PCBs and PCTs. Ireland fully supports this effort. Statutory restrictions on the use of PCBs and PCTs are already in operation under the European Communities (Dangerous Substances and Preparations) (Marketing and Use) Regulations, 1979. Disposal is regulated by the European Communities (Waste) Regulations, 1984.
