Bernard Allen

Question:

442 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Labour if he will outline the number of accidental deaths in the agriculture industry in each of the years between 1987 and 1991.

The National Authority for Occupational Safety and Health was established under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 1989 and commenced compiling statistics on fatal accidents in work sectors, including agriculture, which were coming under the terms of the new legislation for the first time from 1 January 1990.

The figures available from the authority for fatalities in the agriculture sector are as follows:

1990 — 26 fatalities

1991 — 35 fatalities

The following statistics on occupational fatalities in farming prior to 1990 were obtained from the Central Statistics Office:

1987 — 48 fatalities

1988 — 22 fatalities

1989 — 31 fatalities.
