Vol. 416 No. 1

Written Answers. - Rationalisation of FCA Units.

Jim Kemmy

Question:

44 Mr. Kemmy asked the Minister for Defence if he will make a statement on the future of the FCA unit located at Lahinch, County Clare, and the changes which have occurred there since 1991.

Dick Spring

Question:

47 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Defence whether any proposals have been made since 1 January 1991, at brigade, command or general staff level, to reduce the company organisation of certain FCA battalions in the Dublin, Cork and Kerry areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter of the reduction or amalgamation of FCA units, or indeed the expanding of PDF infantry units at company level.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 44 and 47 together.

The question of the rationalisation of FCA units is currently being addressed. The object of the exercise is to establish how the training and administration of the FCA might be carried out on a more cost effective basis. Examination of this matter is proceeding and there will be no decision taken in relation to any specific unit or location until this examination has been completed.
