Vol. 416 No. 1

Written Answers. - Attack on Irish UNIFIL Position.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

60 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline (a) the circumstances in which an Irish UNIFIL position in Lebanon was struck by an anti-personnel shell on the night of 22-23 December 1991, (b) if those responsible have been identified and (c) the protests, if any, which have been made to those involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

On 22 December 1991 a tank round fired by the Israeli Defence Force into the Irish area of operations in UNIFIL struck the Irish-manned position at At Tiri. Fortunately, no one was injured. This was a very serious incident and was vigorously protested by the UNIFIL force commander to the Israeli military authorities. It was also the subject of a strong official protest to the Israeli Permanent Representative at the United Nations.
