Vol. 416 No. 1

Written Answers. - ESF Grant Qualification.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

129 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if a person (details supplied) in County Kildare, who has completed a diploma course in manufacturing engineering at Dublin Institute of Technology, Bolton Street, Dublin, and has been offered a further degree course in production engineering, will qualify for a European Social Fund grant or other grant assistance; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

European Social Fund maintenance grants are paid to those pursuing certificate and diploma level courses in vocational education committee third level colleges. The scheme does not extend to degree level courses.

Students pursuing degree level courses are considered for financial assistance under either the higher education grants scheme or the vocational education committee scholarship scheme. I understand that, based on examination results, the person in question did not qualify for grant assistance under either of these schemes.
