Vol. 416 No. 1

Written Answers. - Taxi Licence Application.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

133 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment if a person (details supplied) in County Kildare can obtain a taxi plate; if so, if he will outline the procedures to be followed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The granting of taxi licences is a matter for the Garda Commissioner, acting in accordance with the provisions of the Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) Regulations. With effect from 24 October 1991, a restriction was placed on the issue of new small public service vehicle licences, with the exception of 100 new taxi licences for the Dublin taximeter area. I do not propose to alter that position until I have considered the report of the interdepartmental committee which is carrying out a review of the law applying to the operation of small public service vehicles generally. I expect that report to be submitted to me by early March.
