Vol. 416 No. 2

Written Answers. - Hospital Wastes Disposal.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

136 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Health if he will consider the option of mechanical disinfection for dealing with hospital wastes; and if he will make a statement on the various methods of disposal of hospital wastes currently under investigation by his Department.

My Department are aware of the recently developed process of shredding and grinding of infectious waste and simultaneous treatment with disinfectant. However, a number of significant issues, including environmental considerations, have yet to be clarified before this new technology can be fully assessed.

The other method of disposal of clinical waste under consideration is incineration and tenders are expected shortly for a central incinerator plant.
