Vol. 416 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tourism, Transport and Communications Investment.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

55 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if she has satisfied herself that sufficient investment in tourism, transport and communications is provided for in the next ten years along with EC financial support with particular reference to comparable investment in other EC States; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Major multi-annual investment programmes are currently under way in the tourism, transport and communications sectors co-financed by the European Community and due to run to the end of 1993. The aim of these investments is to further develop the sectors so as to create significant new employment opportunities in the State, improve transport and communications links with our trading partners in the Community and beyond it, and so help Irish businesses generally to grow as much as possible.

The Deputy can be assured that I will be seeking to maximise the levels of investment and European Community assistance for the sectors for which I have responsibility in the periods beyond the current programmes.
