Vol. 416 No. 2

Written Answers. - Wind Energy.

Ivor Callely

Question:

81 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Energy if his Department have received submissions in relation to the use of wind energy; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy may be aware, on 30 November 1990 my Department received a total of eight submissions from interested parties for the construction of Ireland's first wind farm in response to an invitation for proposals issued by my Department in October of that year.

Following a rigorous appraisal of these submissions, the proposal from Renewable Energy Ireland Ltd. to construct a wind farm at Bellacorick, County Mayo was selected subject to the conclusion of satisfactory contract arrangements.

I expect that this wind farm will be operational by the end of October this year.
