Vol. 416 No. 2

Written Answers. - Arrest of Foreign Fishing Vessels.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

84 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for the Marine if he will outline, (a) the numbers and the origin of all foreign registered fishing vessels arrested by our fishery protection vessel in our territorial waters during 1991, (b) the ports they were brought into and (c) the fines imposed in each case.

A total of 55 foreign registered vessels were arrested in Irish waters by Irish fishery protection vessels during 1991. The countries of registration of the vessels in question were as follows: Spain 38, United Kingdom 11, Panama three, France one, Holland one and Germany one. Of these 39 were escorted to Castle-townbere, nine to Cobh, three to Killybegs, three to Galway and one to Ringaskiddy.

A number of the cases involved have not yet been heard by the courts. However, of those that have come before the courts to date, 21 convictions for fishing offences have been secured, resulting in fines totalling £495,272.50. The following schedule outlines details.
