Vol. 416 No. 2

Written Answers. - Curragh (Kildare) Civilian Prisoners.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

86 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Justice if he will confirm that civilian prisoners are to be accommodated in the Curragh, County Kildare due to overcrowding in Mountjoy Prison; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government have approved the takeover of the military detention barracks in the Curragh for use as a separation prison for disruptive prisoners. The prison will have accommodation for over 40 prisoners and will be operated exclusively by the prison service. It is expected that the new prison will be operational later this year.
