Vol. 416 No. 2

Written Answers. - Illegal Casual Trading.

Bernard Allen

Question:

88 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice the steps he has taken to reduce the level of illegal casual trading in Cork city which is costing the business people in Cork city millions of pounds every year according to their spokesman (details supplied).

I am informed by the Garda authorities that all complaints of illegal casual trading in Cork city which come to their attention are investigated and referred, if appropriate, to the Director of Public Prosecutions for direction. The Garda authorities have also informed me that the divisional officer in Cork would be pleased to discuss with local business people any problem which they may be experiencing in relation to casual trading in the area.

I would point out, however, that legislation governing casual trading is primarily the responsibility of my colleague, the Minister for Industry and Commerce, to whom any observations on the scope of application of this legislation should be addressed.
