Vol. 416 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schengen Agreement.

John Bruton

Question:

94 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement on the possibility that Ireland might at some stage accede to the Schengen agreement which establishes a frontier free area for persons within Europe.

Progress is being made in drafting conventions between the 12 member states of the EC which will allow for free movement of persons without controls at internal frontiers of the Single European Market.

The agreement signed at Schengen was reached between certain Community states which share extensive land frontiers and is concerned principally with abolishing controls at such land frontiers. There is not an immediate prospect of our acceding to the Schengen Agreement but the possibilities in that regard will be kept under consideration.
