Vol. 416 No. 2

Written Answers. - Additional Teachers Allocation.

Jim Higgins

Question:

104 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education if he will list the secondary schools for which additional teachers were allocated as indicated in media reports on 27 January 1992; and if he will give details of the categories of teachers allocated.

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Questions Nos. 97, 157 and 158 on Wednesday, 19 February.

It is not the practice of my Department to indicate the teacher allocations of individual schools.

Additional teaching posts will arise from a reduction in the pupil/teacher ratio, from the concession of allowing the vice-principals in larger schools to be outside of the normal staffing quota and through the provision of additional guidance teaching in schools. Except in the case of the guidance provision, it will be a matter for school authorities themselves to decide on the subject areas to which teachers are appointed.
