Written Answers. - Juvenile Detention Centres.

Question:

172 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education if he will give details of, (1) the various detention centres available for, (a) juvenile boys and (b) juvenile girls, (2) the total capacity of such centres and (3) the plans he has for additional accommodation for juvenile offenders.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 104 of 19 February 1992 in which I gave details of the total accommodation currently available for juvenile offenders and the plans for further accommodation in this area.

The individual centres involved are as follows:

1. St. Joseph's, Industrial School, Clonmel.

75 boys on long term detention.

2. St. Michael's Remand and Assessment Centre, Finglas.

20 boys.

3. St. Laurences Industrial School, Finglas.

55 boys on long term detention.

4. Oberstown Boys Centre, Reformatory School, Lusk, Co. Dublin.

10 boys on remand. 4 boys on long term detention.

5. Trinity House, Reformatory School, Lusk, Co. Dublin.

2 boys on remand. 28 boys on long term detention.

6. Oberstown Girls Centre, Reformatory School, Lusk, Co. Dublin.

7 girls on remand. 4 girls on long term remand.
