Question:

55 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Finance if he will give details of the plans by the Office of Public Works to provide a floor and steps to the tower at Kilmacduagh, County Galway, and if it is proposed to open the tower to the public.

I propose to take Question Nos. 51 to 55, inclusive, together.

The provision of visitor facilities, including toilets, at Kilmacduagh monastic site is being considered as part of a submission, on the assumption that there will be another phase of EC Structural Funds. The restoration of the Glebe House will also be considered in this context.

For safety reasons, access to round towers in the care of the Office of Public Works is not normally allowed. Consequently, it is not proposed to open the tower at Kilmacduagh to the public.

The condition of the road leading to O'Haynes Church is a matter for the local authority.
