Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Border Counties Special Funding.

James Leonard

Question:

111 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for Finance if he will give details of the allocation to each of the Border counties, including County Sligo, from the European Regional Development Fund and from the Special Border Areas Programme from 1987 to date and the projects funded.

Details of the commitments approved from the European Regional Development Fund, together with the projects funded, in each of the Border counties, including County Sligo, for 1987 and 1988 are shown in the tabular statement which is being circulated in the Official Report. This statement does not take account of non-quota measures such as the special Border areas programme and the textiles programme nor of the STAR and Valo-ren Programmes, certain telecommunications projects and the National Programme of Community Interest — Roads Development in Ireland 1986-1990, since these programmes are multi-regional and the commitments cannot be broken down on a county basis.

The special Border areas programme 1986-1990 provides European Regional Development Fund aid of £24.754 million for energy and tourism measures. The amount of aid allocated to each county under the programme in respect of tourist amenities and infrastructure and access roads is shown in the following table.

The tourism promotion measures frequently embrace more than one county and consequently it is not possible to provide a breakdown of aid by county. The energy measures included in the programme are work in County Louth on the provision of the natural gas pipeline from Dublin to Dundalk and work on a westward extension of this pipeline.
The tourism amenities, infrastructure and promotion projects aided under the programme are listed in the attached statement.
Regional Fund commitments from 1 January 1989 are made on a programme basis and a county breakdown is not available. A breakdown of total structural spending on a sub-regional basis including the EC aid provided is prepared on a regular basis by my Department and copies of this breakdown are available in the Dáil Library.
