Vol. 417 No. 6

Written Answers. - Speed Limit Signs.

Enda Kenny

Question:

130 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline his Department's responsibility in providing speed limit signs; whether these signs are placed and positioned at the discretion of his Department's officials or local authority officials or on the recommendation of the Garda and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The application of local speed limits, which are set out in regulations made by me on a county by county basis, is indicated by means of traffic signs. Signs may also be used to indicate where a general speed limit is being applied. Signs indicating the application of a speed limit in common with all traffic signs are provided by local authorities with the consent of, or at the direction of, the Garda Commissioner. I have no direct function relating to the provision of traffic signs.
