Vol. 417 No. 6

Written Answers. - Block Grants.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

135 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a special grant available to complete road works from Listowel to Dirha East, Listowel, County Kerry.

As the road in question is a regional road, responsibility for carrying out works on it rests with Kerry County Council and the cost falls to be financed from the local authority's own resources, supplemented by the discretionary grants allocated annually by my Department for such roads. In the current year, the discretionary grants to Kerry County Council total £3.203 million. Subject to general guidelines, the determination of priorities in the expenditure of these grants is a matter for the local authority.

Having regard to the level of funds available for non-national roads and the competing demands of other projects throughout the country, I am not in a position to provide a special grant in this case.
