Vol. 417 No. 6

Written Answers. - Irish/Israel Tax Agreement.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

95 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Finance whether Ireland has a reciprocal tax agreement with Israel; if not the reason therefor; and whether this can now be negotiated and agreed.

Ireland does not have a double taxation agreement with Israel for the reason that Israel has not made any formal approach about the desirability of concluding such an agreement and we, for our part, have not been notified of any residents of Ireland who are being doubly taxed as a result of the lack of such an agreement.

While my Department and the Office of the Revenue Commissioners are anxious to extend Ireland's network of double taxation agreements, it is possible to do this only over a period of time and priority must be given to the conclusion of agreements with countries with which Ireland has strong economic relations. If, however, the existence of a double taxation agreement with Israel has now become important, and representations are made to my Department setting out the reasons for this, the matter will certainly be considered by my Department in consultation with the Revenue Commissioners and other interested Departments.
