Vol. 417 No. 7

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grant.

William Cotter

Question:

132 Mr. Cotter asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the conditions under which a higher education grant is made available to a student attending university in England; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Grants awarded under the higher education grants scheme are tenable at institutions of higher education in Ireland in respect of attendance at degree or other approved courses.

The payment of a higher education grant may be continued for one year in respect of attendance abroad where, (i) the period of study abroad is shown to be an integral part of the student's course, and (ii) the period of study abroad is a requirement of the course as laid down by college regulation, (iii) the student continued to be registered at the home university or college. The procedures described above are broadly in line with the terms of the ERASMUS scheme, the purpose of which is to promote third level student mobility between EC member states.
