Vol. 417 No. 7

Written Answers. - Hospital Examination of Rape Victims.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

82 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Health if his Department have examined the implications for public health policy of the recent judgment given by the Supreme Court in the case taken by a 14 year old pregnant rape victim; if he will outline the results of any such examination; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The judgments arising from the recent Supreme Court hearing involving a 14 year pregnant rape victim have raised a number of complex issues which will need careful consideration. It is vital that these issues be treated with insight and care so that their precise implications, including any which might affect public health policy, can be fully understood.

Because of the constitutional, political, humanitarian and other questions involved, this process will inevitably take time and it would be irresponsible to attempt to come up with instant solutions or suggestions.

Once all the implications of the judgments have been fully examined the Government will be in a position to announce proposals to deal with this matter.
