Vol. 417 No. 7

Written Answers. - Facilities for Mentally Handicapped.

94.

(Limerick East) asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the crisis facing the Mid-Western Health Board in caring for the mentally handicapped, and in particular, the fact that parents have been notified that no places will be available for their children who have reached the age of 18 by June of 1992 in any residential care centre; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

An allocation of £275,000 has been made available for the development of additional mental handicap services in the Mid-Western Health Board area. The projects to be funded are matters, in the first instance, to be considered and agreed by the Regional Mental Handicap Co-ordinating Committee. My Department recently received the committee's proposals from the Mid-Western Health Board and they are currently being considered. I will communicate the outcome to the Deputy as soon as possible.
