Vol. 417 No. 7

Written Answers. - AIDS Deaths.

Joe Sherlock

Question:

112 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for Health the number of persons who died from AIDS during 1991; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

During 1991 there were 21 deaths from AIDS.

I am concerned at the evolving epidemiology of AIDS and HIV in this country and, under my chairmanship, the National AIDS Strategy Committee will be bringing forward recommendations in the near future designed to provide an appropriate response to this situation. I will be announcing these measures shortly but in broad terms, they will involve services and programmes aimed at the prevention of HIV and care and management for persons infected with the virus at primary, secondary and tertiary care levels.
