Vol. 417 No. 9

Written Answers. - Crumlin Crime Levels.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

167 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the concern of residents in the Crumlin area of Dublin 12 at the rising crime levels; the present staffing levels in Crumlin village Garda station and the Sundrive Road Garda Station; if he intends increasing the current gardaí numbers there so that the fears of residents can be allayed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that while the overall level of crime in the Crumlin and Sundrive Road Garda Subdistricts has remained relatively unchanged over the past three years, the local Garda officers are aware of increased concern in the area arising from a recent murder and a serious case of arson at a local school. I understand that arrests have already been made in both of these cases and the Garda authorities are confident that these arrests will help allay the fears of local residents about crime in their area.

The Garda authorities inform me that the current Garda strengths at Crumlin and Sundrive Road station are 71 and 47, respectively. I understand that there are no proposals at present to allocate additional gardaí to Crumlin or Sundrive Road stations. The situation is, however, being kept under continuing review.
